Pond UV Lights aka Ultraviolet Clarifying Filters and UV Pond
Sterilizers
While they are by no means a necessity for the pond, ultraviolet
sterilizers do provide fish pond owners with an added defense against waterborne algae
as well as many bacteria, viruses,
and fungi that may attack valuable koi.
As water passes through a UV sterilizer, the unit produces light at specific wavelengths which work to kill
germs, thereby reducing the number of
microorganisms—including, most importantly, algae—in the water. Sterilizers are
available in various strengths and in dozens of models. Consult a local pond supplier for a model suited to your pond.
This is the one last type of filter that we strongly
suggest you consider using. It's also called a (UV) ultraviolet clarifying filter. It consists of an in-line
sealed box through which water passes. Inside
the box is a waterproof compartment housing an ultraviolet light
fixture. As water passes through one end of the box, past the ultraviolet light, and out the other
end, the light kills off algae.
Of several types of UV filters on the market, the
most effective ones use a quartz filter. The intense light that a UV filter generates penetrates the walls of the
algae, and this causes them to die off and clump
together. These clumps can then be removed as they pass through a mechanical filter.
The main drawback to using a UV filter is that it needs to run
continually to be effective, so a lightbulb normally lasts for no more than a year or so. however,
you should definitely change the bulb and clean the
quartz filter annually, ideally in spring before algae have a chance to take hold. Even if the light still
works after a year, change it anyway, since the
power of the UV rays greatly diminishes after that time.
One thing about UV filters and algae: they don't
get rid of all forms of algae, such as the string types that cling to the rocks inside of your pond.
They only get rid of the suspended algae. But, since
that's the algae that makes water appear green and dirty and robs the water of oxygen, killing off
suspended algae will help keep your water cleaner, clearer, and
safer.
UV filters have an additional benefit for your fish
pond, as well. Just as they manage to kill off suspended algae, the UV rays are also effective in
eliminating some types of harmful bacteria fungi,
and parasites. That means that a UV filter can benefit pond owners not only cosmetically by keeping the pond clean
but also physiologically by keeping the fish
healthier. You don't believe me? Since adding a UV filter to my largest pond, on water has never been clearer
or are fish never been healthier.
One important consideration in buying a UV filter for your
pond: in the case of ultraviolet light, less is definitely not more. If a UV filter is rated for a
pump that pushes 1,200 gallons of water in one hour,
you are recommended to buy one rated for at least half again as much, or 1,800 gallons of water.
Please trust me on this. The more intense the UV rays are, the cleaner, clearer, and healthier your
pond water and fish will be.
