Pond dyes and lake dyes have been around for many years now and are used to provide many
useful benefits to the pond or lake owner. To make it as easy as possible for you to learn about pond dyes
and what their benefits are, I have broken it down into separate sections so that you may read each section in it's
entirety or just skip to the subject matter you are interested in.
What is Pond Dye?
Pond dye is a concentrated water soluble solution and food grade dye. It is
in the same categories of dye that are used to artificially color various foods including but not limited
to, ice cream and beverages. Pond Dye is specially formulated to create different colors of dyes so that the
water appears to look like natural fresh water. One can easily see that since it is even used in our everyday
food products it is definitely harmless to all fish and aquatic plant life.
What is Pond Dye Used For and Why?
Pond dye works by adding the various dark water dyes to your pond or lake which will limit the
amount of sunlight that reaches the bottom of your pond. When you limit the sunlight by adding pond coloring you
are adding several very important benefits to your pond.
What are Some of the Benefits of Using Pond Colorants? Some of these benefits include but are
not limited to the following: It is non-toxic, does not have any harmful affect on
pond plants or animals, really helps quite a lot to control the growth of algae, may help to prevent or
inhibit surface ice from building up quickly during the cold winter months, and last but very definitely not
least, is also acts as a wonderful shield of protection from the prying eyes of predator birds and animals. A
pond or lake that has dye or coloring is indeed a very pretty site!
Let me go into a little more detail about a couple of these benefits. The main two
benefits, as far as most of us are concerned are that it helps control the growth of algae and acts as a form of
protection from predators.
Algae Inhibitor Pond dye inhibits the growth of algae by inhibiting the sun from reaching
the bottom of your pond, where most algae starts to grow. Remember that plants need sufficient amounts of sunlight
to grow, even within a pond. Therefore, by reducing the amount of sunlight penetrating to the bottom of the
pond, this will definitely help inhibit bad weeds and algae growth. Pond dye however will not kill existing surface
algae
The key to inhibiting or decreasing algae growth is to
apply the pond water colorant in Spring as early as possible. The benefit of adding the pond
dye before algae germination is that it will help throughout the entire season. The
key to limiting algae is applying the product as early in the growing season as possible. So, as you can see,
it is best to add the pond water dye before algae germination as this will help throughout he entire season.
Predator Protection! (Great Idea) As stated above, the darker the pond water is, the more
it will prevent predators from getting to and eating your fish. Only common sense but oh so helpful to
know.
I will give you an example from my own personal experience with losing KOI from my pond. I had been
noticing that the number of Koi I had in my pond had seemed to be decreasing. I knew that we had well over
150 fish in our 3,000 gallon pond but it seemed to be getting less fish?? Why?
Well, one day last summer, I just happened to be in my back yard and noticed something quite large walking around
in my front yard by the pond. WOW! I had never seen a bird that large around here. And, he was
eating my KOI for lunch!!
It turned out that this bird was a Great Blue Heron from the local Allegheny river
area.
Between the Great Heron and the hawks, I was losing many fish.
It was at this time, while searching for
ways to protect my Koi from predators that I happened to learn about pond dyes. All I can say is that as far
as I know, I have not lost a single KOi since I added the water colorant. They can't eat what they don't
see!
How to Apply Pond Dye:
Application of most pond dyes is pretty straight forward. It is simply a matter of pouring a little colorant
at desired points around the perimeter of the pond or lake.
This mixing process can be accelerated substantially by using a garden hose to help move the dye around the
pond.
JUST REMEMBER THAT THERE IS A LARGE VARIETY OF POND DYE COLORS AVAILABLE ON THE MARKET. Enjoy and Thank
You!
